Our School Council enjoys a close relationship with the administrative team at our school. Members are welcomed and encouraged to have frank discussions on a variety of topics relating to our children and our school. We feel our input is valued and we are asked to engage regularly when new issues or policies are brought up.
The Council is invited to participate in many school events, such as the Remembrance Day ceremony, Awards Night, Grade Nine Farewell and Grade Seven Parent Orientation. These are great opportunities to engage with parents and students to showcase the work that the Council does on behalf of families.
The school continues to offer Parent Engagement Nights on various topics ranging from mental health, school resources and online safety. Council members discuss topics of interest with Administration for these sessions. We were also able to take part in Mental Health Week events by hosting barbeques at the school for staff and students.
Our School Council, together with our Parents’ Association, hosts an annual Dodgeball Tournament. It is a great event, that not only proves to be a good fundraiser, but it is a fun event that was well received by students, staff and parents. Our Parents’ Association uses its funds to fuel and maintain the school owned bus, subsidize field trip bussing and to provide the awards for our annual Awards Night in October. The school owned bus is getting older and is no longer suitable for long trips outside of our city. That along with a waning number of teachers that are licensed to drive the bus is why we support the school’s decision to use the bus for local travel only. The Parent Association is committed to maintaining current funding levels to be used for travel, whether by school owned bus or third-party providers.
We look forward to working with our school administration to find new ways to engage parents in our school events and to foster good communication between our students, families and our school community.
